Glenn ‘Mitch’ Mitchell is the owner of Midcoast Kayak. As a high school teacher, National Outdoor Leadership School instructor, independent rambler and Registered Maine Guide, Mitch has been guiding journeys around New England, Alaska, and South America for thirty years. His respect and connection to land and sea alike is evident in his teachings and everyday living.
Guide Paul Knight took up kayaking a little later in life and is now happily addicted to the sport. He is an avid explorer and has paddled around Midcoast Maine extensively, including exploring Hockomock Bay, Mussel Ridges, Stonington, Cobscook Bay, Passamaquoddy Bay, and Isle au haut. He has logged an impressive 600-800 miles a year of solo and group paddling. Paul lives in Portland and is a great and inspiring addition to the Midcoast Kayak team.
Joe is a Master Maine Sea Kayak Guide, an open-water sea kayak instructor with the American Canoe Association, and a wilderness first responder. He is also a licensed clinical social worker, and a returned Peace Corps volunteer (Zambia 07-09). Joe has paddled expeditions as far away as Fiji and Zambia, has through-paddled the coast of Maine, and section-paddled from New Hampshire to Nova Scotia. Joe enjoys bringing people of all walks and strokes of life into the marine environment, and he often leads paddlers to his favorite place in the world; the Cushing Island Cliffs, a mere three miles from Portland, where guillemots nest above the wild open sea.
Sam Russ grew up right here in Damariscotta and has spent his entire life playing in boats and the ocean. He enjoys running, music, and all things outdoors (especially kayaking). He joined the Midcoast Kayak team in 2018 as store staff and delivery driver and now works as one of our registered Maine Guides. Sam currently attends Oberlin College and Conservatory where he is pursuing degrees in Tuba Performance and Classics.
